The western culture has a more individualistic skew to it. I think this allows self-centeredness to be easily masqueraded as ambition. I guess this is amplified when a native Asian dips into western culture and walks back to his origins believing he has foreign experience; and so he is in a position to dictate social norms.
What is the point of a clear vision, direction and ambition, if the strategy is bulldozing towards it? In your impatience and arrogance you destroy relationships and sully the network of support that made you who you are today in the first place.
Instead, marry the two experiences. And with finesse, create your own culture of harmony then forge ahead with your destiny.
